The new Insta360 X3 action camera is making choosing a camera more difficult. It's simpler to use than the old model, has a bigger image sensor allowing for 72MP 360-degree photos and HDR video, and offers new features for sharing videos on various social media platforms through the Insta360 app.
Insta360 X3: Design
The X3 has a larger touchscreen compared to the Insta360 One X2, making it simpler to operate and see what you're filming. It's 2.29 inches in size. Below the screen, there are two buttons: one for starting and stopping recording, and another for switching between using both camera lenses or just one. On the sides, you'll find a power button, a Quick settings button for changing shooting modes, and latches to protect ports and slots. It has a standard tripod screw mount on the bottom. The X3 is shaped like a rectangle, making it easy to hold without a selfie stick. However, it's a bit too large for mounting on a helmet for action shots and is slightly heavier than the GoPro Hero10 Black. Nonetheless, its ridged, rubbery sides offer a secure grip.
Insta360 X3: Availability
The Insta360 X3 will be released on September 8th on Amazon and other stores in the UAE. Insta360 will also offer some accessories, such as a microSD card quick reader with both USB-C and Lightning adapters. This makes it much faster to transfer files from the camera to your phone compared to using Wi-Fi.
Insta360 X3: Video quality
The main upgrade in the Insta360 X3 is its new 1/2-inch image sensor, which is bigger than the One X2's sensor. This allows for 72MP 360-degree photos and 8K 360 timelapse videos.
Like previous Insta360 cameras, the X3 has excellent image stabilization. You may test its six-axis gyroscope by attaching the camera to your dog's back with a GoPro harness and taking him for a run in the park. Despite your dog moving around a lot, the video comes out smooth with very little shaking.
The X3's Active HDR mode works well on a sunny day, but when when you are in the shadows with the sun directly behind you, it makes your face look dark and blurry.
We will be testing the camera more in the coming days to explore its new features, such as 8K 360 timelapse, a 4K single-lens mode, 4K 120 fps Bullet time, and Me Mode, where the camera focuses on you while you're recording.
Insta360 X3: App
Shooting with a 360-degree camera has its perks. You can film first, then decide later how you want to frame your shots. Insta360's app has a lot of editing options, which might take some time to master. But there are plenty of cool features to explore.
For example, you can pick a subject, and the camera will automatically keep them in focus until you turn off the tracking.
For the TikTok crowd, you can choose different video aspect ratios like vertical (9:16) and square (1:1). And for those who prefer traditional formats, options like widescreen (16:9) and cinematic (2.35:1) are available too.
Final Thoughts
We are impressed with what we have seen of the Insta360 X3 camera so far. It's easier to use than ever, and the app has lots of cool features for creating and sharing videos. However, all the app and camera features need further exploration.
